abakyala3Ugandan musicians Munna U Operator and Fifi Da Queen have recorded the wonderful advocacy song ‘Abakyala‘ in which they jointly condemn domestic violence against women. Humanity has come far but we still do not respect our wifes, sisters and daughters as it shall be. Although the video highlights the situation in Uganda, it is important to mention that domestic violence is a huge problem in many societies in the world. It is crucial that artists like Munna U Operator and Fifi Da Queen take their popular role seriously and use it for such important messages.

Jukebox2South African newcomer band Muzart released the video for her first hit ‘Jukebox‘ and makes us very curious to listen to their album. The Rhythmic Soul (House) Live Band produce a funcadelic and eclectic sound that sounds very mature considering that they have just released their self-titled debut album. The five band members (Sol Mosetle, Victor Chauke, Rorisang Thandekiso, Jabu Junior Kanyile and Tshegofatso Lehutso) describe their music like this:

“The music contain a lot of soulful sounds, with a touch of jazz, gospel put together with the new age appeal of Hip-Hop funk and house. It is a journey of old school and new school put together.”

‘Lusaka by Night’ – John Wizards

Lusaka by nightBeautiful mix of the traditional and the futuristic.” This is just one of many possible ways to describe the multidimensional nature of John Wizards’ ‘Lusaka by Night‘ tune. Cape Town based band John Wizards – founded by John Withers – just released their self titled LP, of which ‘Lusaka by Night‘ is the leading track. According to their label Planet Mu their sound recipe for this track “includes R&B, various southern African styles and dub, making for an infectious electronic pop soup.”

Let me keep it short: It may at first sound humble but it is truly a very complex, rich and massive sound! We are looking forward to hear more innovative stuff!

Listen below to ‘Lusaka by Night‘ and their welcome message for the mother city: ‘Welcome to Cape Town, Cape Town welcomes you‘. Read here an Pitchfork-interview with band leader John Withers.

mnatebawenSouth African rap artist Khuli Chana just released the video for his feel good tune ‘Mnatebawen‘. The song is taken from his widely celebrated LP ‘Lost in Time‘, which won a SAMA-award in the category ‘Best Album’ as the first Hip Hop album ever. KayGizm & Fifi Cooper are featured on the song.

Mnatebawen‘ means ‘It’s nice to be you’ and in the video we can see him celebrating this sentiment but he does not do it alone: Khuli Chana invites the community to join him. As he is riding in a white limousine through he streets of Joburg he invites kids playing on the streets, church women and some friends to celebrate with him.

Enjoy the Teboho Mahlatsi directed video below. Definitely one of the best videos in 2013 so far!
